What to practice
Read before calculating
Restate what is known and what the question asks. Many contest problems reward a clear model more than fast arithmetic.
Try more than one route
Draw a picture, list small cases, look for a pattern, or work backward. Compare methods after solving.
Review mistakes calmly
Mark the step where the reasoning changed, then solve a related problem a few days later.
A simple weekly routine
- Twice a week, solve five mixed problems without a time limit.
- On another day, revisit two mistakes and explain the corrected method aloud.
- Once a week, complete a short timed set, then review every answer.
- Keep sessions short enough that the child can finish with focus and confidence.
